If for nothing else, we believe the Lord brought us halfway across the world to take a look at our own lives and draw us closer to Himself. To invest in our children, and teach them the ways of the Lord, to direct them in the way of righteousness.
A few weeks back, Calvary Nairobi had a visit from Ray Bentley and his wife. We were telling Ray how we intended to join him for his tour of Israel and he told us that we must read the book ‘Epicentre’ by Joel Rosenberg before we went. So Bry and I both sat down over a week or so and got into one of the most interesting, factual and dynamic books we have ever read. It reminded us both of the stark reality of Jesus imminent return and stirred in us an urgency to share and encourage Christians and non-Christians alike to redeem the time. The current rumblings in the Middle East and the prophecy in Ezekiel 38-39 of the war of Gog and Magog (present day Russia and Iran) suggest that the end of time is near. If you want to be reminded of the prophecies concerning the Lords return and His faithfulness to His chosen people Israel, please read this book- it will change your perspective and life dramatically. I have to say, for me it has reminded me how much we can trust the Lord to follow through on what He says He will do. Please pray for Israel as they face the largest war in history, praise the Lord that He will defend them.
So back to Nairobi!
It has been amazing to see the amount of relationships we have established since arriving here about two months ago. The Lord has blessed us with people to minister to and encourage all over the path our lives have taken over the last two months. One guy we want to tell you about is Eric. Eric works at a shoe shop in the shopping centre where we do our shopping and is an amazing young man. He works full time, six days a week for a measly 7000 Kenyan Shillings per month. ($110 AUD)
When we met Eric He had been a discouraged and defeated Christian. He had been out of fellowship for some time due to the discouragements that arose from the seemingly false teachings in the church. He thought that something had to be wrong with him due to him not being able to find a church anywhere that sat well with him. All that was being taught was prosperity doctrine and he didn’t like it. On hearing the truth of the gospel and the simplicity in Christ, Eric has read three books Bry has given him and is hungry for the word. He insists that Bry is his Paul and he is Timothy. All over Nairobi we have relationships with people, from Karaoke and Moses who sell movies on the side of the road, to Pili and Steven at the coffee shop, to Ruth and Maggie at Amani Ya Juu, to James the security guard at the shopping centre, to David the computer guy, to Isaac the missionary kid, to Violet who lives in Kawangwarie slums, to Omar (the guy who gave us a free safari), to Franko the Christian businessman from the US who fellowships with Bry at the golf tee, to our flower man (we get a bunch of roses for about $2.50 so Bry has no excuses now!!). We are very blessed.
Bry has been blessed to get to know about 5 back-slidden missionary kids as well. He and one of the other pastors from Calvary have been encouraging and teaching these guys every Wednesday night at our place, which he has been enjoying thoroughly!
Bry and I had the opportunity last week to go into the biggest slum in all of Africa, Kibera. On coming to Africa we packed a bag full of toys and gifts for the kids that have nothing, so we were able to hand these out. It was a great experience and one I’ll never forget, to see the poverty these people live in. The kids walk around saying “how are you, how are you, how are you?” cause that’s the only English they know, and touching your hands. Unfortunately I can’t get the pictures to work that we took in the slums to give you an idea of what its like- hopefully I can update that soon! While we were there Bry got to lead three guys to the Lord- Henry, Peter and Leonard, please pray the word they received will be cultivated. We are heading back in this week so please pray for our safety and for the Lord to lead our steps.
In the coming weeks I also have the opportunity at Amani Ya Juu to help train some of the new women to the programme how to sew and thus support themselve’s financially. I’m looking forward to this opportunity.
Also my Mum and Dad will be arriving in about 2 ½ weeks which we are looking forward too! After my parents leave we plan to go to Ethiopia for about 3 weeks before heading up to Egypt, Jordan and Israel. While the last three countries are a bit of a family holiday we are still open to the Lords leading. After reading “Epicentre” how could we not be prepared to share with people as the Lord leads! And encourage and support the Israeli people.
Thanks for the encouragement and prayers,
The Hendersons

HENDO’S IN AFRICA
Well, here goes another attempt to update you all on what has been going on over here in Kenya since arriving in Nairobi about 4 weeks ago! While it kind of feels like it has taken awhile for us to start being involved in things it’s exciting to see the doors that have been opening up for us to serve. In the first few weeks that we have been here we have decided to put the girls in a Montessori holiday program to open ourselves up to be able to serve. It has been interesting and challenging but good to have the time alone and to help out.
Bryan has started teaching his Hebrews Bible College class and has been trying, on most of his days off to study. As well as Bible College and men’s ministry he has had numerous opportunities to teach. The Lord provided a neat opportunity through a friend Paul, in Newcastle, to meet William the pastor of a slum Baptist church. His Church which is located in one of the slums operates two slum schools, so we were able to visit both, at which both the girls were mobbed! Bry taught devotions for the high school and he was also blessed to be able to teach at the Church. It has been a blessing to get to know William and his wife Grace.
As well as all the teaching that’s been going on we have been able to get involved in a ministry called Hope House which is a home for unwanted or mother offered adoption babies. It is very sad to see these kids and Bry and I want to bring them all home....... there is only 19 of them!! The age of the kids ranges from 2 weeks to three years. Hope House is suffering financially however and are in desperate need of finances to look after these kids and pay their staff. While we don’t like to ask for money, how can you all know the need if we don’t let you know, these guys need help. If you want to make a donation to their cause please email us and let us know, the money will go directly to them. (bryan_tara@hotmail.com).
In Kenya and Nairobi specifically there is so much need. Everywhere you turn there is someone else that could use your help physically and financially so it has to be the Lord that guides. So please pray about it and let us know.
As well as Hope House I have been helping out at the Church with preparing the sewing ministry for the women. The women have to attend Bible study and then after study they are able to sew sequins onto a shawl which is then sent to America to be sold. Each woman receives a certain amount of money per shawl to help them provide for their family. It is a neat ministry for helping these women out and also hearing the word of God.
Celeste, Mildred and Joyce preparing the shawls for the women
The Lord has blessed us with so many friendships with the Kenyan people here, we are loving just being among the people and being open to what the Lord has for us. While at times it’s hard and we want to come home, we know the Lord has us here and so it’s easier to get through the hard times. We have a few more opportunities possibly opening up over the next few weeks so next blog hopefully we can update you on those.
Prayer requests: We need to find an apartment over here but it’s very expensive! Please pray that we find one within our price range very soon because we have to be out of our place by Thurs.
Praise the Lord for bringing us here, we are so blessed. Thanks for all your support and prayers, Bryan, Tara, Lillika and Rafi

Jambo or Habani Yako which means hello in Swahili! We have to apologize for the lack of correspondence thus far, but that’s Africa for you! Access to Internet has been limited and unreliable. To update you on our first five weeks in this beautiful continent is going to be difficult without going on for pages and pages, so bear with us.
Arriving in Jo’Burg the pastor of Calvary Chapel Jo’Burg picked us up and he and his wife and four kids welcomed us into their two bedroom home for four nights! It was a tight squeeze to say the least. They run a drug and alcohol supported living program on the grounds where they live, so it was a blessing to get to know the guys living there and for Bryan to be able to teach the mid-week study at Calvary. When we had partially recovered from the jet lag we hired a car and drove from Jo’Burg to Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. We wont get into the difficulty we experienced at the border but email us and we can tell you if you really want to know. There we had a sweet reunion with our brother in the Lord and dear friend, Dennis. Most of you know Dennis, but for those who don’t- he was the second person to get saved at Calvary Newcastle, he is blind and has gone deaf in one ear. He is an amazing guy. We spent three weeks with Dennis and his family, ministering to those that the Lord put in our path, which were many. One thing which we did notice and was impossible to avoid was the myriad of Christian TV channels (at least 30) that propagated false doctrine, healing ministries and prosperity doctrine, without one solid channel. A very large percentage of churches focus on finances and prosperity without actually giving to those in need, and the unsaved that we met, in particular Dennis' family were greatly affected by the hypocrisy in the church. The opportunity for ministry and encouragement therefore was great.
Botswana culture is very different from our own and it’s been interesting adapting to these differences to be able to relate to the people. At one stage in Botswana we visited Dennis’ home village Mahalapaye which is a two hour bus ride from Gaborone. Let’s just say it’s not your normal bus ride! People gather at the bus stop and when they see a bus coming which is going where they want to go, before the bus has even stopped they’re grabbing onto it, pushing and pulling to get on. Not too bad to deal with if you’re a single person without any luggage, but as you can imagine the difficulty we had with 2 kids, blind Dennis and lots of luggage!! Once on the bus, they don’t know the meaning of the word full!! I sat with both kids on my lap while Dennis and Bryan stood for the three hour journey stuffed into the bus. It was an experience, but not one we want to repeat anytime soon!! As for Dennis He got news the day before our departure that he had secured an internship with the red cross of Botswana which was great news for him seeing that he had been looking for work since arriving back in his country. We stayed with Dennis' brother Onalenna for the last week and had a great time getting to know him, all the time Bryan talking business strategy with him. Onna didn't talk much about the Lord with us until the last day of our stay at which time he began to ask Bryan questions that seemed like had been saving up for years. At the end of all his questions being adequately answered he asked the question we love hearing which is "what do i need to do to be saved?" He hasn't yet surrendered his life to Christ but please be praying for this man. One of our favorite memories will be when Dennis attempted to direct us through Gaborone based on his memory of the city. He did well most of the time but there were a few times we drove around aimlessly but it was great fun anyway. It will be a sermon analogy for Bryan in the future no doubt when he gets to passages that speak of the blind leading the blind. hahaha! We also got to visit with our friend Boy whom we also met at the Calvary Chapel in Newcastle. He came up from South Africa to Botswana and spent a few days with us and Dennis and then drove us back down to Jo'Burgh for our flight to Kenya.
It has been amazing to see the amount of people that the Lord has put before us that we have been able to share the gospel with or even just encourage since we arrived, even on the next leg of our journey in Mombasa on the Kenyan coast.
We arrived in Nairobi and then the next day flew to Mombasa with Dave and Twinkle (Nairobi pastor and his wife), and some other missionaries here in Nairobi and from Tanzania. It was a good time of holidaying and getting to know our neighbors for the next five months. God gave us great relationships with both the staff and some of the guests at the resort.
We had again the opportunity to meet a man by the name of Eric on the beach that had recently committed his life to Christ. He had been taught all different things about the bible that were of no truth or value. We had a great walk along the beach with him and got to encourage him in the Lord. The main encouragement seems to be the same wherever we go and that is to read the Word and hold all things to Scripture. These people live with weird teachings all around them and we have done our best to encourage them to have there senses exercised by reason of use in the Word of God as Hebrews tells us that we will be able to discern both good and evil when it comes to sound doctrine and the person and work of Christ. We have all had a bit of stomach adjusting to do since getting to Kenya but I think we are on the mend now. Lillika and Bryan got to go on a camel ride along the beach and I had the opportunity of taking Lillika to a animal park to feed the Giraffes which Lillika absolutely loved.
We have now arrived in Nairobi and are looking forward to what the Lord has for us here. Hopefully we can now update a little more regularly! We are excited with the lord providing us our own place for 5 weeks for free. One prayer request is for the childrens behaviour- I think the unsettledness is getting to them and it feels like we are re-training them all over, it is extremeley trying! Please let us know if you want more details on any part of our trip so far, we would love to share but this could go on for pages. We continue to ask for your support in prayer. Bryan, Tara, Lillika and Rafi

We leave May 17th
We head out of Australia on the 17th of May which is this Sunday to come. We will arrive in Johannesburg and will visit with Pastor Chad and the Calvary Chapel ministry there. We hope to get the kids adjusted in the first few days and then travel over to Gaborone, Botswana and visit with our dear friend Dennis. Dennis was the second person to get saved in the ministry in Newcastle Australia and is a dear brother in the Lord. Dennis is blind and is deaf in one ear but has a tremendous trust and maturity in Christ which never ceases to amaze me. Tara and I plan on visiting with him and his family for a couple of weeks and possibly even leading some bible studies with him and his family. Both Dennis and we are very excited at the opportunity to catch up in Botswana. We then plan on flying up to Kenya and settling down there for the rest of our planned time in Africa. The Pastor David and his wife Twinkle have 2 girls similar ages to our own which should be a good thing for the kids adjusting process. I will begin by teaching for David from the start of June while he takes a team to minister to a remote tribe in the Congo. When the team returns back to Kenya, David and his family and us the Henderson clan will go on a family holiday to Mombasa on the coast of Kenya. Upon returning back to Nairobi from the family holiday it will be time to plug away at the ministry He has for us there with bible college courses starting up shortly after our arrival back. As of now I will be teaching Hebrews and the Pastoral Epistles. Tara will also hit the ground running when we arrive back in Nairobi with the previously mentioned ministries! The only other thing roughly planned at the moment is a trip to Israel joining up with a tour which is lead by Pastor Ray Bentley of Maranatha Chapel in San Diego.
Support
We do have a need for financial support so if you desire to serve in this way please contact us via email. We didn’t think there would be a need for support because I was getting paid workers compensation from my back injury which was meant to be paid for 78 weeks. As of last week though the insurance company decided to deny liability leaving us only this week to attempt to raise financial support. We do however have some savings which will help us to begin with but we would very much appreciate your prayer in these things. If you are interested more in our financial situation you are more than welcome to email us at bryan_tara @ hotmail.com and we would love to answer any questions you may have.
Initial Newsletter
We are very excited to share the news that we are up and headed off overseas. Tara, Lillika, Rafi, and myself are heading to Africa to serve the Lord and see what it is exactly He has for us in that part of the world. As most of you know we have been serving at Calvary Chapel Newcastle Australia for several years. I moved to Australia in 2002 and helped out here with a church plant and while doing so I fell in love with Tara and got married a short time later. Tara and I have two little girls, Lillika aged 3 ½ and Rafi aged 1 ½. Since moving to Newcastle I have been teaching bible college classes and filling in for Terry, the pastor when need be. As of late I have been teaching through the book of Acts for a mid week study for the fellowship and have loved every minute of it.
In late October last year I injured my back working as an underground coal miner and it seemed like my ability to work in a labor intensive work force such as coal mining was not an option. All of my doctors and medical specialist recommended not returning to this type of work and informed me that my back was not going to hold up long term in the profession I was working in. It was at this point that Tara and I began to seek the Lord for what He had next for us. We understood doors to be closing and we were looking forward to the next path the Lord would have for us that we should walk in. So, Tara and I began to speak about the options of going to Africa and fulfill a heart’s desire that primarily Tara has had since she was very young. Surprisingly the Lord has been giving me more and more of a desire to go to Africa and see what it is the Lord may have for us there. Tara and I had been sensing the Lord calling us both into more of a vocational ministry and we didn’t think we could pursue that in Australia until we seek out why it was that the Lord had been putting Africa on our hearts. We have a desire to be a part of pastoral ministry here in Australia but understood that once we settle down to plant a church or take over a pastor-less Calvary in Australia we will need to remain faithful to that work and plow the ground and care for the sheep entrusted into our care. And so we thought it wise to see what He has for us in Africa before committing to another work in Australia. It may be that the Lord is calling us to do a 6 month trip to Africa and serve where we are needed or it may be that He wants us to stay on longer. We are open to His leading and are excited to step out in this new venture of faith. Whether we stay in Africa or return home to plant a church in Australia it is a very exciting place to be following after His will for our next steps in this life.
Upon researching where in Africa the Lord might want us to go we came across a Calvary Chapel in Nairobi Kenya that was in need of personnel to serve in many different ways and it seemed to match in with our hearts desires and gifting. They have a ministry to the refugee women which teaches them crafts that they are then able to sell to provide for their families. They also have several ministry opportunities in the slums which is where all the poverty stricken people live. Tara will be helping with nursing in the slums and Rabuni Fi which is the ministry to the refugee women. Tara will also be serving by leading worship and working with orphaned children. These are all things that Tara is very excited about and as stated before that meet up with the desires in her heart. The church also is in need of bible teachers for both bible college courses and church services. I will therefore have an opportunity to teach and serve in any other capacity that David Zavala (the pastor) needs help in. We are really looking forward to this trip and expecting the Lord to use us and encourage us mutually with the faith of the believers in Kenya. We are planning on keeping all of you that receive this newsletter posted on what great things He is doing and what our next steps are as we take them. So please will you join with us in prayer as we go!
